The first period, talked about at home
The GIOCUP® first period kit is the kit 0+1: a size 0 menstrual cup, a size 1 cup and the menstrual cup case. This page is also a guide for mums and dads: how to talk about the first period at home, what to expect in the first months and what to put in the backpack pouch.
The first period arrives one day, and what stays with her is more than the day itself. It is the way it was talked about. This page is for you, mum or dad: what to say, what to expect and what to have to hand, so that your daughter goes through this moment without shame and with someone she trusts close by.
Changing the taboo starts at home
Menstruating is part of the body. It is not a secret.
Talking about the first period at home does not take a big conversation: it takes an open door. For generations we learned to hide our periods, to lower our voices, to say “that time of the month”, and you can change that with your daughter.
If you talk about periods with your daughter before her first one arrives, it will not frighten her: when it comes, she already knows what it is. Make the most of a question, an advert, a trip to the shops. Small conversations are worth more than a speech.
When you call things by their name (menstruation, period, vulva, vagina), you show your daughter there is nothing to be ashamed of and you give her the words to explain what she feels.
Tell your daughter she can ask anything about periods, to you or to another person she trusts. If you are her dad, the first period conversation is yours too: being there is what counts.
What to expect
In the first months after the first period, every body has its own rhythm, and what is usual for one person may not be for another. Instead of rules, here are three essential ways to support your daughter:
To have to hand
Putting together a backpack pouch with your daughter, before her first period, is a good way to start the conversation. What to put in the kit:
Getting to know your flow builds confidence.
Only when she wants to
There is no rush and no rule for starting to use a menstrual cup. Some start with pads and try the cup later, others want it from their first period. The choice is your daughter's, and any choice is the right one.
Menstrual cup size is chosen by measurement, never by age. Each person's flow and anatomy count for more than age. We designed the GIOCUP® size 0 menstrual cup with the first cycles in mind: we started from a survey of around 200 cups on the market, with one goal, to come in below the diameter of the smallest cup then catalogued with our geometry. The result: 33 mm.
The kit 0+1 brings both sizes side by side:
| Diameter | Total height | Capacity | Who it is for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Size 0 | 33 mm | 70 mm | 10 ml (max. 12 ml) | Light flows and those just starting out |
| Size 1 | 43 mm | 80 mm | 20 ml (max. 25 ml) | Light to medium flows |
If you are unsure between size 0 and size 1, the kit 0+1 includes both.

Questions from mums and dads
A first period kit should include pads or whichever product your daughter chooses, a change of underwear, wipes and a small bag to keep whatever is needed. For when she wants to try the cup, the GIOCUP® kit 0+1 brings together a size 0 menstrual cup, a size 1 cup and the case.
No. At the first period, the menstrual cup is one option among several. Your daughter can start with pads and try the cup when she feels comfortable. What matters most is that she feels good.
There is no set age to start using a menstrual cup. The size is chosen by measurement and by flow, and the right moment is when your daughter feels comfortable trying it.
Menstrual cup size is chosen by measurement, never by age. If your daughter does not yet know which one fits her, the kit 0+1 includes size 0 and size 1 to try. You can also take the GIOCUP® 3-question quiz together with your daughter.
Your daughter can keep the menstrual cup in for up to 12 hours in a row. Then it is emptied, rinsed with water and put back in.
During the cycle, the menstrual cup is washed with water. Before first use and at the end of each cycle, it is boiled for 4 to 5 minutes and stored dry in its case.
